Sunrise City Q&A #1

Welcome to Sunrise City's weekly Q&A, a new type of subject where we will address the questions you have about the game, its universe, its characters, its creation and its evolution.

This new content will depend on your participation, so don't hesitate to ask your questions in the comments or in the #qa-faq channel of the Discord.

Let's get started with this first Q&A session!

1. [Technical] What tools do you use? (Topogigio)

(This question is part of a larger one that we will be covering in installments over the course of the Q&As).

For the creation and brainstorming phase we use a whiteboard, post-it notes and our notebooks.

The planning and management part is done with Project and Trello.

For everything to do with scripts, dialogues, the game bible and other documents, we use Word, Excel and Acrobat.

For the production phase, in art we use Photoshop for everything 2D (illustrations, interface, some secondary characters, textures of 3D characters, etc.) and Maya for the 3D part (characters and backgrounds).

For the code, we use Visual Studio. Regarding sound, OKH's music is done in Cubase, for the rest we use Audacity for sound effects and retouching.

English translation is handled by Sunny, with support when needed from DeepL.

All this work then goes into the game engine, Unity, before ending up in your hands! 😊

2. [Lore] What year is the game set in? Where is Sunrise City located? (Thom Cairmine)

We haven't defined a set year, but rather a mix between the 90s (or even older) and the present day. This allows us to mix our "calmer" vision of the 90s with some more contemporary elements (smartphones, social networks…) to create a contrast that will allow us to address certain themes that interest us.

As for the location of Sunrise City, it is an island (not very far from the mainland) connected by a bridge to the east coast of the United States. It is completely autonomous and does not belong to any state, as it benefits from a special status due to its history.

3. [General] How many versions do you think you'll need to finish Sunrise City at the moment? (Thom Cairmine)

We can't give any figures, but we still selected this question to explain our vision.

First, just in case, we would like to remind that Sunrise City is planned as a 3-part story, with an ellipsis between each part and 3 different heroes. The first part being Kyle's story, focusing on his years at Onyx.

The heart of the story and the end of each part are already defined, but not everything that goes around it, or even some important elements that will depend on the community's choices/feedback.

We find it extremely interesting to allow the community to choose the content of certain versions. This allows us to offer you content you like, to deepen certain themes, to focus on certain characters, and even to create content we hadn't planned. But to do this, we sometimes have to pause the storyline or slow down its progress.

For example, for the content of v1.0.0, the 4 proposals didn't all allow us to make the same progress in preparing season 1, but we didn't indicate this. We preferred to propose interesting stories and see what the community decides according to its tastes, not just to move forward as quickly as possible.

For those wondering, the proposal with the most elements needed for season 1 was "Holly and Sam" and the one with the least was "Ellen and Jill".

So, we don't have any figures to give, because Sunrise City really evolves as we progress, between what we have planned and your feedback.
